SetPoint Medical is offering patients with the autoimmune disorder rheumatoid arthritis something close to a cure. The company’s SetPoint System—which was FDA approved in July—is a small neck implant that gives an electrical jolt for one minute a day to the vagus nerve, and has been shown to help regulate the body’s immune response. “This is just the beginning” of neuromodulation devices to treat chronic inflammatory illnesses, says Murthy Simhambhatla, SetPoint’s CEO. Already the company is seeing positive results in studies for applications for Crohn’s disease and multiple sclerosis, and has partnered with Northwell Health to deliver the SetPoint System to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
